Governor Kiraitu Unveils Meru Tourism Board

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi last week unveiled an 8-member Meru County Tourism Board amidst calls to diversify and jointly market with Mt Kenya and Aberdares Counties Economic Bloc to boost the sector.
The board under the chairmanship of experienced Prof. John Nkinyangi is expected to rebrand the Meru tourism sector which has potential, but that is yet to be exploited.
The home of the infamous green gold, Miraa, currently appears to be thriving with the mushrooming of ultra-modern hotels accounting for the increased uptake of corporate conferences as well as devolution events like the Devolution Conference that the county hosted in 2016.
However, with a lot yet to be done, the new board will be hoping to aggressively market the many tourist sites in the county like the Meru cultural festivals, mountains, safaris, sports, and water tourism. This it wishes to do in collaboration with the national government, the private sector, and the locals.
The board also expects to continue with the ongoing upgrade of the Njuri Ncheke Cultural center, where the county can store its rich history of Meru people, cultural heritage as well as traditions.
The board has already received the backing of the hoteliers in the county, who are asking it to spearhead efforts of diversifying tourism products to include agro-tourism.
Other members of the team include Hon. Raphael Muriungi, Former Deputy Governor, Meru who is also former Asst. Minister Tourism, Christopher Kirimi Chair YETU Sacco, Phineas Kimathi, Chair Kenya Motor Sports Federation, Dr. Tuqa Jirmo, Chief Operating officer Lewa Conservancy, Titus Murungi, CO County Tourism Department, Charity Mukonene and Rosemary Kirimi who have long experience in Hotel industry.
