The Nairobi University (UoN) was delighted to host the 5th edition of Nairobi Innovation week which has been ongoing since June 10 and ending today the 14th. The event presented an opportunity for over 70 exhibitors consisting of startups, enablers, corporations, government agencies, and the private agencies to showcase their innovations on matters ecosystem.
During the event, the Nairobi University students launched an App, RADA, which is a health app developed by UoN students with collaboration with students from other institutions and UNESCO to improve students livelihood.
While speaking during the launch, Prof Walter Jaoko, Deputy Director of Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) who also headed the initiative to develop the app said that “Issues at the core of life have been addressed in this app,”
Rada is an application developed in a bid to address various issues faced by the students while in their campus life. The problems range from sexuality, HIV and AIDS; career; finance; alcohol and drug abuse to mental health.
The app which will only be used by the students enrolled with the university comes at a time when technology has taken a more significant space in our society and lives. The platform hence, will play a big role in passing messages from the institution to the students and likewise as it offers chat rooms.
Other core benefit that the students are set to enjoy from the application include counselling, which will be offered by the university counselors for free. The app will be a game changer to the student’s campus life having in mind that the number of youth undergoing stress and depression in our society has been on the increase.
Notably, none of the 16 students who developed the application studied computer science or any ICT related course.
“In developing the app, there was no assumption that these are university students, so we desired that it has the simplest of information about the issues being tackled,” said Prof Jaoko.
Some of the students that took part in the development of the app include Risper Gichuki (economics), Victoria Wairimu (counseling psychology), Kelvin Kinuthia (construction management), Joseph Kingori (political science) and Musa Ibrahim (microbiology).
The app developed in collaboration with UNESCO will offer significant benefits to the students, and it is for this reason that the university will soon seek to collaborate with other institutions in the county for them to have a similar application.
Soon the app will be accessible through Google Playstore. Anyone can download the app but there are specific features that can only be accessed by a UoN student.
