The county government of Turkana has set aside 500 acres irrigation farm at Kaitese-Kolioro in Loima.
The county has decided to bank on irrigation farming in a bid to end the culture of relief food reliance.
The county plans to use the land in growing sorghum, maize, cowpeas, and assorted vegetables to support 1063 households.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who toured the farm said with proper planning Turkana can easily become Kenya’s food basket.
The CS added that with proper planning, the practice would be able to make Turkana county a food hub and seize from hitting the headlines year in year out as suffering from food drought.
Governor Nanok echoed the sentiments adding that Turkana County only needs proper planning for it to be able to be the country’s food basket as the project is quite promising in the area.
The CS challenged the governor to focus on water harvesting to end the practice of relying on rains for agriculture.
The CS highlighted the need to work on ending the issue of having draught as an emergency by thinking out of the box on how to mitigate the effects of drought with the resources allocated to them.
On the other end, Budalangi legislator Raphael Wanjala has accused county governors of negligence and being incompetent.
The lawmaker argues that the county chiefs have failed to utilize funds allocated to them prudently for the good of the citizens even as he decried widespread corruption in some counties.
Wanjala cited on how funds have been mismanaged by various counties hence leading to them not being able to deliver their mandate.
According to the lawmaker who was on a tour of his constituency, most governors had resorted to misuse of funds meant for projects and must be brought to book by the anti-graft agencies.
Turkana is one of the poorest regions in Kenya with low literacy levels. The majority of poor in the area lack access to clean water and electricity.
