President Uhuru Kenyatta is next week expected to preside over the launch of the much-awaited inaugural Kenya Airways (KQ) flight to New York, US.
While addressing the press at Kakamega’s State Lounge on Saturday, Miss Kanze Dena who was recently confirmed as State House Spokesperson and Head of the President’s Strategic Communication Unit revealed that the President would preside over the launch at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
“The President will be excited to join Kenyans at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to launch the first direct flight from Africa to New York,” she said.
Miss Dena however, said that the President would not fly in the maiden flight that will leave the JKIA on October 28, 2018, direct to the JF Kennedy International Airport in the United States of America.
She further revealed that the Head of States would offer free tickets, for the maiden flight, to two young Kenyans who have exemplarily performed in selected fields in the country.
“They will be counted among prominent Kenyans who will make the maiden flight,” she said during the Saturday presser.
Dena added that the day had elicited excitement from tourists, investors, business leaders and all Kenyans in general.
Also expected in the inaugural flight is Africa’s first female Dreamliner captain, Irene Koki who is scheduled to commandeer it.
KQ has set two Dreamliner aircrafts for the daily flights to and from New York, one making a night flight from JKIA and another making a mid-day from JFK International Airport. The crafts will have a capacity to cruise with 234 passengers on board; 30 at the premium world-class and 204 in the economy section.
The national airline will on that make history to be the first airline in the East African bloc to ever make direct flights to the JFK International Airport, New York.
The flights are, however, expected to not only open Kenya to the US, but the other East Africa nations, boosting tourism, trade, and investment among the partner countries.
