A math and physics teacher residing from rural areas in Nakuru County has made Kenya shine after being awarded the 2019 Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize on Sunday.

Brother Peter Mokaya Tabichi who teaches at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani village, Nakuru County won the award after having been giving 80 percent of monthly income to help the poor.

Peter Mokaya, 36, is a member of the Franciscan Brothers. His students where he teaches come from a very poor background, with some being orphans, or having one parent.

Besides, Mr. Mokaya has been able to guide the student’s science club to national and international heights while teaching them internet content that he collects from cyber cafes.

It can be noted that in 2017, the school participated in the National Science and Engineering event in which one of the projects was an innovation on electricity production using plant extracts which saw the school rank second nationally.

“Bro Tabichi is humble and committed to his work. Apart from teaching, he spares time to advise and inspire us,” Dennis Ngige, a Form Four student, said.

“Every day in Africa we turn a new page and a new chapter. Today is another day,” Tabichi told the foundation. “This prize does not recognize me but recognizes this great continent’s young people.”

Notably, Mr. Mokaya’s efforts have seen the secondary school where he teaches double his number of intake students over the past three years even though many face food scarcity, early pregnancies, and marriages. The school has recorded an increasing number of students joining college due to his efforts.

“You have to do more and talk less,” Tabichi said.

He accepted the award from actor Hugh Jackman, who hosted the ceremony in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
