The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it seeks ways to evacuate 12 Kenyans stranded in Afghanistan.
The 12 Kenyans have been working for different international organizations, as identified by the Kenya High Commission in Islamabad in Pakistan.
According to a presser to the newsrooms, the Ministry communicated with foreign Missions in Nairobi and wrote to the concerned organizations to evacuate the Kenyans.
As of Thursday, 19th August 2021, three (3) Kenyans have been evacuated, with two working for Action Contre la Faim expected to land in Nairobi tonight at around 9 pm.
In a statement, the Government stated that “The safety of Kenyans is of utmost importance to the Government of Kenya.”
The international organizations the 12 Kenyans working for include:
- Swedish Committee – 2
- Supreme Audit Office (World Bank) – 2
- International Rescue Committee -1
- International Development Law Organization (IDLO)- 1
- Danish Committee for Aid to Afghanistan Refugees -1
- MEDAIR -1
- Action Contre la Faim (ACF) -2
- Handicap International (HI) -1
- Intersos -1
Kenya relies on the Kenya High Commission in Islamabad, Pakistan, for facts on Kenyans in Afghanistan. It has no diplomatic presence in Afghanistan.
The US, Germany, Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, and Pakistan have mobilized evacuation efforts, with some suspending their diplomatic missions in Kabul.
