Kenya has entered into talks with three Middle East states concerning the betterment of working environment for Kenyans in the countries.
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have in the past been employing a good number of Kenyans, most of which are working in people’s homes and semi-skilled sectors.
The agreements between the states are going to formalize employment terms and improve working conditions for over half a million Kenyans working in the Middle-East significantly.
According to the chairperson of Kenya National Employment Authority Winnie Pertet, the talks will also see only authorized employment agencies being tasked with the role of taking Kenyan workers to the Middle East.
Previously, various unauthorized agencies were involved in taking employees to the states something which led to them working under harsh conditions.
However, this is expected to change as the government agency experts will sign an employment agreement with the Arab nations before the end of the year.
There are hopes that the discussion will open doors for better-paying jobs for Kenyans. “We hope that we can also place Kenyans in the skilled sectors which are more lucrative,” Said Ms. Winnie.
