Clearance of goods at border points and ports has received a boost after KenTrade in partnership with International Finance Corporation (IFC) last week rolled out Internet and Wi-Fi connection at the clearance posts of Busia, Malaba, Taveta, Isebania, Namanga, Port of Mombasa and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The implementation of the Internet services which are already being used by government agencies was done in support of Kenya Investment Climate Program 2, a branch of the World Bank Group.
Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Principal Secretary State Department of Trade, applauded the move saying it testified the government’s commitment through partnerships, to reduce the cost of business in the country.
“Using ICT as an enabler, the business community and citizens have
been accorded seamless services in addition to giving them the opportunity to access Government services anytime at their convenience,” said Dr. Kiptoo.
He highlighted the Single Window System, as part of the initiatives by the government to allow traders to lodge documentation electronically for government approvals.
KenTrade CEO, Amos Wangora, also revealed that the agency has progressively implemented all the 21 modules in the Kenya TradeNet System enabling over 10,500 users to make various transactions digitally.
” We have 35 Government Agencies on board the TradeNet System, and we are processing close to 600,000 transactions annually,” said Wangora.
He added that the agency had integrated the system to banking institutions and mobile payment platforms through the KRA iTax system, making it possible for business people electronically honor payments to the government.
Mr. Wangora also revealed that the agency, with the support of the Kenya Investment Climate Program 2, had facilitated government agencies at the border posts 35 laptops to promote trade.
