About 800 students from less privileged families in the country are set to benefit from Safaricom’s full secondary scholarship at the telco’s M- Pesa Foundation Academy.
This was revealed as President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, October 24 graced the opening of the Sh3 billion education complex academy in Thika.
The Mang’u based ultra-modern which currently has 487, admitted the first group of students in 2016.
“When we opened the doors to the first cohort of students, it marked the start of the M-Pesa Foundation biggest programme, and probably the one closest to our hearts,” said M-Pesa Foundation chairman, Michael Joseph.
The facility is a mixed boarding facility that besides preparing students for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), has also redesigned its subjects to encompass leadership and entrepreneurship.
President Uhuru Kenyatta applauded Safaricom for the initiative stressing that it fostered cohesion and unity by admitting students from each county across the nation. He also noted that the academy was a good testimony of what the collaboration between the government entities and the private sector can achieve.
While responding to a question from Ms. Joyce Nyawira, a student at the academy, President Kenyatta also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the country will be more united and cohesive by the time his term ends in 2022.
“I hope many things, but one is that I will leave a cohesive country and two, that we shall have won the war on corruption,” he said.
Other dignitaries who also attended the function were, former Vice President Moody Awori, Education CS Amina Mohamed and Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
