Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Monday revealed that his administration has embarked on delivering 200,000 affordable housing unit that will be sold at about Sh1- 3 million per unit.
Governor Sonko said that he was taking the initiative to help President Uhuru Kenyatta deliver his half a million housing units promise to the county as part of his Big Four Agenda for the next four years.
Speaking during the World Bank’s second Urban Dialogue on delivering affordable housing in Nairobi, Sonko said already phase one of the urban regeneration programmes, that targets between 10,000 and 12,000 housing units, was underway.
“We have called for expressions of interest for Phase Two, and other phases will follow immediately after that. We plan to deliver about 200,000 units in total as Nairobi County Government,” said Sonko.
The government also added that his administration is negotiating with private developers to have 70 percent of their project’s costs not more than Sh3 million per unit.
” In the negotiations, the developers can then build more expensive units on 30 percent of the project,” he said.
However, while highlighting some of the challenges standing in front of this initiative, Governor Sonko noted that some parcels of land earmarked for the housing project are on the flight path of the Moi Air Base and Wilson Airport. The effect is that the housing projects being reduced from 30 to 14-story units.
“I am appealing to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority to call a meeting with the Nairobi City County Government, the Department of Defence and Ministry of Transport to map out the flight paths. This will allow us to build taller buildings in areas outside this path. We have already engaged DoD on this, and they are positive in finding a workable solution,” Sonko added.
The Nairobi County Governor, meanwhile, revealed his administration planned upgrade of several slums in the capital city starting with the more massive Mukuru slums and Mji wa Huruma slums.
