
President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a deal to have Kenyan farm products exported to Mauritius.
According to Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma, more products like baby carrots, and broccoli are set to access the market after avocados as the existing ban was lifted.
“Appreciating Kenya’s avocado that is now approved to get into the Mauritian market…” a tweet from Amb. Juma reads.
The Head of State who will be in the state for a four-day tour held talks with his Mauritian counterpart Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory at State House, Le Réduit and later Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
The move by Mauritius comes less than six months after the Chinese government opened its doors to Kenya’s fresh produce.
President Kenyatta said the lifting of the ban by Mauritius would help improve Kenya’s export to the Indian Ocean Island country and is a significant boost for horticultural farmers in the country especially women who are the majority in the sector.
“The visit to the Republic of Mauritius offers a great opportunity to strengthen the brotherly ties that exist between the two nations,” State House Kenya said on Twitter.
The President will be attending a business forum organized by the Mauritius Economic Development Board. The meeting is in collaboration with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Kenya Investment Authority.
“Both countries can benefit from the proximity of each other to foster closer cooperation across many areas. I welcome the conclusion and signing of agreements in six areas during this state visit,” the President said
The meeting will showcase the available trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
