Dysmus Kisilu is this year’s winner of the Progress Award following his efforts to provide smallholder farmers with solar powered inputs to improve their production, especially in the rural areas.
The award was presented to him by a gathering of young world leaders called Goalkeepers, during this year’s 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). Kisilu joined three other world leaders who were also feted, in the event that was held in New York, for their works in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The young Kenyan entrepreneur is the brain behind Solar Gel, a company that provides small-scale farmers with renewable energy options to increase farm production. The services which are powered by solar as an alternative source of energy include cold storage units and irrigation kits.
Solar Gel has so far equipped 3,000 women in rural areas effectively increasing their farm production by more than 150 percent compared to 2016.
“The idea is not only to increase yield’ but also make new generations aware of renewable energies,” he said.
In a bid to make sure many young people embrace renewable energy, the 25-year-old has also launched the “Everyone, teaches, trains and wins” through the Solar Freeze startup which he is a co-founder.
The initiative currently supports young people aged 18 to 19 and has so far provided 100 young people with access to regular income. The youths are trained in how to operate, maintain and repair the equipment.
The graduate from the United States’ University of California also revealed that their company has installed fully powered refrigerators in the Kakuma refugee camp to help doctors store vaccines while improving living standards in the camp.
