The government has announced that they will be replacing the cooking gas cylinders with piped cooking gas in line with its housing agenda.
Energy PS Andrew Kamau made the saying that the project by the government will see all residential homes and houses connected with the piped cooking gas in a bid to ease the trouble faced by residents moving from one location to the other with the cylinders.
“We want to do away with cylinders and allow piped gases into houses through prepaid meter systems.
“We are about to change the legal notice to allow for piped gas to all those low-cost housings. So, you do not have to move around with those cylinders. It will come to your kitchen through a prepaid meter if you want or through a metered system that can be billed to the provider,” remarked Kamau.
The project which was first suggested in 2011 made some progress later in 2018 when the Ministry of Energy published draft regulations for the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The draft outlined the manner and processes for the licensing and policing firms that were to operate the new system in both commercial and residential buildings.
However, the project had some challenges burring it from making progress after it was brought into the awareness of the then Petroleum CS John Munyes that the country did not have natural gas and petroleum to sustain the project.
The CS explained that the country heavily relied on imported gas mainly from Tanzania and Mozambique.
“It is a good plan but do we have gas reserves in the country? Where are we going to tap the gas from? I think the government must complete its exploration for gas reserves first and if the country has enough gas reserves then this project can be viable,” stated Munyes.
The CS also had severe concerns on matters safety as the piped gas possess a grave threat to the residents and given that there was no assurance that rogue dealers would not mess with the underground gas pipes.
