Immigrants living in the US, including Green Card Holders will repay all aid extended to them by the government. According to the latest proposal by President Donald Trump, all low-income earners legally living in the states will have to be “financially self-sufficient.”
“To protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient,” Trump said in a memo last week.
As the proposal requires all low-income earners to provide compensations, the move has received sharp critics as its set to punish the immigrants unfairly rather than help them recollect their lives.
Immigration advocates Marielena Hincapié and Olivia Golden, who commented on the same said that the move was “brutal, reckless, dangerous and an inhumane agenda.”
“Trump will do anything to send immigrant families the message that if you’re not white and wealthy, you’re not welcome — or even safe — here,” they said.
“And he doesn’t care that children and entire families will be harmed in the process.”
The Whitehouse, on the other hand, came to Trump’s defence arguing that it’s the high time immigrants start repayments as most of them have taken advantage of the country’s generosity with 58 per cent of them benefiting from either program.
Last year, the government had warned that it would come up with a law that would seek to have immigrants proving that they are capable of supporting themselves financially.
