20 Counties Join Hands with National Government Towards Housing Agenda

Densely populated and rural areas will soon have small townships in a bid to provide affordable houses under the governments affordable housing plan.

The plan that targets to check subdivision of agricultural land is aimed at ensuring that even those in rural areas secure decently affordable housing units.

Over 20 counties have already made a step and signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the National Government to have at least 2,000 housing units in their counties.

Some counties have gone further and identified the land in which they will have the project on; they include Kisumu and Homabay counties.

In densely populated areas such as Kisii and Murang’a counties, the devolved units have set aside land for township development away from the farmlands.

The deficit being experienced in the country is said to have been brought about by several factors among them being exorbitant prices of land, the high cost of construction and low purchasing power.

Given that over 74 percent of employees in the country earn less than Sh.50,000 per month, then they can only be comfortable paying no more than Sh. 20,000 for housing a month.  This means that they cannot be able to meet the average price of mortgage housing delivered by the private sector at Sh. 9.1 million.

The government has incorporated the county government among other key players in the sectors for purposes of land provision for the houses.

Nairobi county government awarded six companies’ multibillion-shilling tenders to construct affordable houses in the capital city as part of the Urban Renewal and Housing Regeneration Programme that will build more than 8,000 units.

Owners of idle land across the country might be slapped with penalties in the near future in the event when the National Assembly and Senate will adopt the Land Taxation Policy.
