Nyeri Launches Flights to Nairobi
With growing use of planes as a means of travel within the country, Nyeri county finally slid into the trend by launching its maiden flight at Nyaribo Airstrip on Saturday.
At only Sh3000, business people, tourists, and other travelers will be able to land at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport in 25 minutes. This will reduce the travel time from Nyeri to Nairobi that normally takes three hours by road.
The maiden flight that landed at about midday, Saturday, had on board ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru, Nyeri Deputy Governor Carol Karugu, Lands PS Nicholas Muragari among others.
While receiving them, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga said he was optimistic the flight would promote trade and tourism in the country besides increasing efficiency in the transport system.
“These direct flights will reduce the time taken to and from Nairobi. We are very proud to launch the first flight in Nyeri’s history,” said Governor Kahiga.
The governor, however, urged the national government to help in upgrading the facility to modern standards to allow expansion of the number of flights between Nyeri and Nairobi in a day.
CS Mucheru marveled at the great experience he had while on board adding that he hoped the government would in future add the services countrywide.
“It was a great experience; there were good views of both Mt Kenya and the Aberdares,” he said.
Located just 15 minutes’ drive from Nyeri town and with a 1.2-kilometer runway, Bushfire Tours and Safaris Company Owner Mr. John Ndiritu believes that Nyaribo Airstrip is capable of accommodating larger planes, therefore possesses a potential of turning around the economy of the county.
The aviation industry in the country has of recently grown tremendously prompting investment in the rural areas that are now open to markets. Flight companies have invaded the industry resulting in lower flight charges that enable farmers to diversify the mode of transporting farm produce to the available markets.
