Kenya Airways (KQ) has according to their website sold old tickets available for its maiden flight from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the JFK International Airport in New York, USA.
According to information from the national carrier’s website, the next available tickets for direct flights to the US are those for Monday, October 29.
A section of the tickets available for the 335 seats for the inaugural flight was reserved for top government officials who will leave in the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on Sunday. Already a delegation from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority will tomorrow depart JKIA for New York to receive the flight when it lands in JFK International Airport.
The government on Friday issued free tickets to two young Kenyans who will accompany other passengers for the maiden flight. The two, male and female, were recognized for their exemplary performance in the innovation space.
26-year-old Evans Odongo has provided an alternative for kerosene lamps in rural areas through his solar-powered LED lantern called Mwanga Bora.
The other beneficiary of the free tickets is Shirlene Nafula who is a graduate from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Biotechnology. The 26-year-old is the CEO of Crystal River Products which manufactures bio-based beauty products
Cabinet Secretary for Transport James Macharia is upbeat the direct flights will bring great opportunities for the country regarding tourism, trade, and investment.
“As Kenya opens up to the world, I would like to encourage Kenyans to travel and explore the opportunities the world has to offer,” said CS Macharia, “Direct flights to the US will enhance JKIA as a regional hub airport and as the key gateway into East and Central Africa. We expect the number of transit passengers to increase. In recognition of this, we will soon be embarking on the rehabilitation of Terminals B, C, and D,” added Macharia.
