The government of the US has increased per diem rates for its officials working in the country. The US recently published the updated reports which indicated that officials in Nairobi are bound to receive a 3.67 percent increase, amounting to $339 (Sh34,239)
Previously, the US paid its officials in the country $327 which is about Sh33,027.33. The current pay puts Nairobi in the list of most expensive cities to work and live in Africa.
Notably, the rates are way high than the rates offered in western cities like Ottawa where they are paid $316, about Sh31,916.32.
However, Uganda payments rank high than those offered to officials in Kenya at $340, about Sh34340.34 for officials in Kampala.
Nairobi is currently ranking in the same group with top global cities such as Beijing which officials are paid $346 which is about Sh34,946.35 and Berlin paying $338 which is about Sh34,138.34.
Per Diem is a type of pay given to employees for extra expenses incurred when on assignments away from the duty station.
“The maximum per diem rates for foreign countries are based on costs reported in the Hotel and Restaurant Survey submitted by US government posts in foreign areas,” the US State Department’s report update indicated.
