The planned Nairobi’s Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system yesterday received a boost after Isuzu East Africa revealed that they are unveiling two types of capacity buses for the project.
The motors company said that each of the two buses would have a speed limit of up to 60 kilometers per hour and a capacity ranging between 62 and 100 passengers. This will include space for both sitting and standing passengers.
Isuzu Kenya, through its Twitter page, also revealed that the buses would be locally assembled to meet specific design for the Nairobi’s BRT standards.
Separately, Isuzu East Africa Managing Director Rita Kavashe said that Kenya had the capacity to manufacture the BRT buses for its cities.
“This will create jobs as well as enable operators easily access credit finance to fund the acquisition of the buses,” she said.
While dismissing the claims that the mass transit buses will threaten smaller matatus, Matatu Owner’s Association chairman Simon Kimutai, marveled at the concept which mirrored the future of the transport industry.
“We support BRT as it includes all public service vehicles and must start with segregating lanes where private vehicles are restricted,” said Kimutai.
The MOA chairman also urged the government to segregate lanes for all PSV where all private vehicle owners are barred. He noted that this would discourage private vehicle owners from using costly vehicles in favor of the cheap BRT buses.
Early this year, the government through the Nairobi Regeneration Committee, unveiled a plan for a BRT system as a way of dealing with traffic menace in the country’s capital. Already the committee had marked lanes along the Thika Superhighway for PSVs.
