The farmers of Kenya will now have the ease of exporting their avocados to China markets unlike before. This comes after the government of Kenya went into a negotiating table with the Asian country to uplift the previous set conditions requiring some value additions.
Confirming this, the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS), Mwangi Kiunjuri said that the government of China had relaxed the previous condition which they imposed.
The previous requirement would lock out many farmers from having their products exported since they lack the machines to freeze and peel off their product.
“As a government, we have negotiated with the Chinese government and the conditions they had put to be observed before exporting avocados have been relaxed,” said Kiunjuri at Wangu ward in Kahuro Sub County.
Speaking during a seedling’s issuance session in Murang’a county, the CS urged the farmers to be on the forefront in enjoying this opportunity mostly to the Asian country as its markets are vast and promising.
He further confirmed that his ministry would be targeting to issue at least six million avocado and macadamia seedling in different parts of the country in a bid to boost production in the country.
“During the ongoing long rains, we are giving out 2.4 million certified seedlings of avocado and macadamia across the country. Next season beginning October to December, more than 4.5 million seedlings will be given out,” said Kiunjuri.
The CS further cautioned the farmers from relying on brokers but instead form cooperatives that will be mandated with the task of exporting their farm products to international markets.
“We will establish strong cooperatives to help in collecting and marketing of farmers produce directly to foreign countries. The cooperative should seal loopholes exploited by middlemen who buy farmers produce at throw-away prices,” he added.
Other seedlings to be issued by the ministry include tea and coffee, with the farmers being requested to register themselves so to benefit from the program.
